Sod Turning This Afternoon For Glace Bay Youth & Family Centre

A sod turning ceremony is taking place this afternoon for the Glace Bay Youth & Family Centre that’s scheduled to open in 2026 at the corner of Union and Reserve streets.

The New Dawn Enterprises project is getting 8.8 million dollars from the federal government and 6 million dollars from the province.

The Centre is being billed as a vibrant, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable place for families, children, youth, seniors, and community organizations.

The facility will include a creative lab and makerspace, a nursery and indoor playground as well as a community kitchen and café.

It will have accessible/barrier-free spaces and a net-zero carbon design.

The sod turning is scheduled to get underway at 3:30.

Health Authority Holding Career Fair In Sydney Today

The Health Authority is holding its first provincial career fair today with Sydney being one of 11 communities with a venue.

The Joan Harris Cruise Ship Pavilion is the location for the Sydney career fair.

The career fairs are running from 10:00 this morning to 7:00 tonight.

Nova Scotia Health says interested candidates can connect directly with hiring managers at the career fairs and learn more about how their skills and interests match its departments.

It says people can also share their resumes quickly using a QR code.

White Murder Trial Verdict, Today

 A Supreme Court judge is scheduled to deliver a verdict today in the case of a Florence man charged with second-degree murder.

41 year-old John Patrick (Jackie) White is charged in the beating death of 60-year-old Robert Bradley in September of 2020.

The Crown called 17 witnesses during the judge alone trial along with two rebuttal witnesses.

The defence called four witnesses.

40 year-old Stephen Bishop was also charged with second-degree murder in Bradley’s death.

He pleaded guilty to the included offence of manslaughter and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Gas Up, Diesel Down

As predicted, the price of gas went up, overnight.

Gas increased by 2.4 cents a litre and now goes for a minimum of $1.89.3 in Cape Breton.

Meanwhile, the price of diesel went down by 4.9 cents.

The minimum price for a litre of diesel on the Island is now $1.83.8.

Boularderie Centre Man Wins Big Lotto Prize

Atlantic Lotto has announced the winner of a $1.5 million prize from a ticket sold in North Sydney.

Russell Musgrave from Boularderie Centre bought the Super Set for Life ticket at Brewer’s Convenience.

He says plans to use his winnings to renovate his home, pay off his daughter's mortgage and help out his loved ones.

It’s not the first time Brewer’s has sold a winning Super Set for Life ticket.

A Sydney Mines couple bought the winning ticket at the store last year.

The store will get a one percent seller’s prize.
